Overview
The goal of Sophomore Advising at Harvard College is to support you, our Sophomores, as you engage in focused academic exploration. It is a collaborative effort on the part of students, Houses, and concentrations.
Your Sophomore Adviser will be assigned on the basis of broad subject areas: science, social science, or humanities, keeping in mind more specific interests. Although it is impossible to match everyone with an adviser from their exact field of interest, your Adviser will still be an invaluable resource in answering your questions or helping guide you in the directions of those who can provide answers.
Your Sophomore Year is an exciting time to make important decisions about your academic and professional future. We are so happy to be a part of this process!
In the fall
Sophomore Advisers will be your primary academic adviser during your third term. Together we will discuss class schedules and offer support you as decide on a concentration, in addition to other academic matters such as balancing academic and non-academic interests, study abroad options, and accessing Harvard resources.
At the beginning of the term your Sophomore Adviser will email you to find a time to meet. You can also log on to the Advising portal (www.fas.harvard.edu/advising) to find your Adviser.
You will be required to meet with your Adviser twice during shopping period, once to discuss which classes you are interested in and once to sign your Study Card once you have made a final class selection.
You will continue to meet several times with your Sophomore Adviser throughout the fall to discuss how classes are going, your extracurricular interests, options for study abroad/fellowships/grants, and concentration choice. Your Adviser will help to point you to Harvard’s many rich and useful resources.
In early December, your Sophomore Adviser will assist you in preparing a Plan of Study, in which you will officially declare a concentration.
In the spring
Your new concentration adviser will sign your Study Card and offer specific advice about your concentration. You will continue to meet with your Sophomore Adviser to talk about summer plans, study abroad options, activities outside of class, and coursework.
