In days of yore, the much revered Kirkland Boat Club, founded in 1931, met to practice and
study the art of rowing in order to ensure victory in the House Crew championships. In
addition, they sought to make a contribution to the Kirkland House community
and therefore provided for all Kirklanders a special treat of "Cookies and
Cocoa" every Sunday night at 9pm in the Senior Common Room (SCR), located in
A-entry.
In more recent times the direct link between the awe-inspiring IM crew team
and the Sunday night study break has become less important, but both
traditions remain strong and vibrant.
The IM Crew season occurs during the spring semester and is a time of
companionship, dedication, hard work, competition, and ultimately victory
that is essential for the claiming of the Strauss Cup. For those respected
Kirklanders who are enthusiastic about forwarding the IM Crew cause, I
recommend that you contact Kyle Satterstrom who will be helping to
organize the IM Crew team in the spring. I also recommend that you avail
yourselves of the wonderful opportunity to participate in recreational
sculling, wherein you can simply present yourself at Weld boathouse, right
on the corner of Mem Drive and JFK, and be given brief instruction and your
own crew boat to take out onto the Charles River. You may find more
information here.
The Cookies and Cocoa study break occurs every Sunday at 9pm in the SCR (1st
floor, A-entry... just follow your nose and listen for the happy sounds of
contended Kirklanders) and is open to all Kirklanders, without any
requirement for membership on the IM Crew Team. This year we will be
reviving the tradtion of the Boat Club Book, where we ask that upon arrival
you simply sign in to leave a record of your participation. No commitment is
desired or implied by your signature.
